# AI Is Becoming the 'First Hire' for Small Businesses — What BC Owners Should Do Differently

On October 21, OpenAI published research framing AI as the "first hire" for small businesses: at least four million people in the United States used ChatGPT for business purposes in March 2026, and **71% of them were active entrepreneurs** running a business today ([OpenAI](https://openai.com/index/ai-first-hire-small-business/)). The most common jobs they handed over were marketing and copywriting (26%), customer communication (11%), and legal and compliance work (10%).

The framing is deliberate: AI lowers the fixed costs of running a business, so a one- or two-person company can now do work that used to require hiring or an outside consultant. The data backs up the idea that this is happening, not just being marketed. The New York Fed found that **46% of small employer firms now use AI**, and that firms using AI are significantly more likely than non-users to expect both higher revenue and *more* hiring over the next year ([NY Fed, Liberty Street Economics](https://libertystreeteconomics.newyorkfed.org/2026/09/businesses-are-using-ai-to-transform-work-not-cut-jobs/)).

That second finding matters. For most small businesses, AI is not replacing staff. It is letting a small team take on more work without falling behind. But treating AI like an employee comes with traps.

## Why "First Hire" Is a Useful Idea — and a Misleading One

An employee has judgment, accountability, and continuity. An AI tool has none of those on its own. It will not notice that a client is upset, that a price changed, or that it just made something up. It does not remember why your business does things a certain way. Every one of those gaps has to be covered by a person.

So the honest version is this: AI is the first *capability* you add, not the first *hire* you make. Someone on your team still has to own it.

## Five Things to Do Before You Treat AI Like a Team Member

1. **Name an owner.** One person is accountable for what the AI does and what it costs. Without an owner, no one checks.
2. **Give it a job description.** Write down what it is allowed to do: which tasks, which systems, which data. "Everything" is not a job description.
3. **Decide what needs a human.** Money leaving the business, anything legal, and anything going to a customer that you haven't reviewed.
4. **Check its work at a fixed cadence.** Someone spends three hours a week fact-checking AI output in the average small business. Schedule that review instead of doing it in a panic.
5. **Track the net saving.** Hours saved minus hours spent checking and fixing. If the number is negative, change the task, not the tool.

### Quick Test: Is Your AI Actually Working Like a Hire?

- Can you name the person responsible for your AI tools?
- Could you list what each tool is allowed to touch?
- Do you know, in hours, what it saved you last month after review time?

Two "no" answers means you have added capability without adding management.

## The Training Part Is Not Optional

The businesses getting real value from AI are not the ones with the most tools. They are the ones where a person was trained to use one tool well on one task. Training is also where small businesses stall most often, because it sounds like time you don't have.

For BC employers, that cost is partially covered: eligible training can be reimbursed up to 80% through the [B.C. Employer Training Grant](https://www.workbc.ca/employers-industry/funding-programs/bc-employer-training-grant) (up to $10,000 per participant). It turns "we should train the team" from a budget problem into a scheduling problem.

This is the work DAOVA does with small and mid-sized BC businesses: [AI training](https://go.daova.ai/blog), practical governance, deployment, and ongoing operations — starting with one task, proving the saving, then expanding.

## The Bottom Line

Four million business users in one month is not a trend to debate; it is the environment you are operating in. The winners will not be the owners with the most AI, but the ones who gave it a clear job and a clear owner.

**Your action this week:** write one sentence naming who owns AI in your business, and one sentence describing the single task that tool is allowed to do. If you cannot write both, that is your real to-do list.
