On October 13, the Government of Canada announced an **additional $500 million over five years** for the Regional Artificial Intelligence Initiative (RAII), bringing total federal funding for the program to $700 million ([Canada.ca](https://www.canada.ca/en/economic-development-southern-ontario/news/2026/10/government-of-canada-expands-support-to-adopt-and-commercialize-artificial-intelligence.html)). The money is delivered through the regional development agencies — for British Columbia, that means PacifiCan.

This is worth separating from the other federal AI money you may have read about. BDC's LIFT program is a separate $500 million initiative focused on loans and advisory support. RAII is a different stream, aimed at helping businesses adopt AI and helping Canadian AI companies commercialize. For an SMB that wants help paying for an actual AI project, this is the one to look at.

## What RAII Can Support

- **Adoption projects** — helping a business responsibly integrate AI into how it operates.
- **Commercialization** — helping Canadian AI companies find customers, attract investment and scale.
- **Regional connectors** — organizations that link businesses with specialized AI adoption support.

Priority sectors named in the announcement include health and life sciences, energy and natural resources, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing and robotics, plus regional strengths.

## Don't Confuse the Three Pots of Money

1. **RAII (PacifiCan in BC)** — project funding for AI adoption and commercialization. Applications and timelines differ by region; in southern Ontario, intake runs to January 19, 2027, so confirm BC's window with PacifiCan before you plan around it.
2. **BC Employer Training Grant (ETG)** — reimburses eligible employee training up to 80%, to $10,000 per participant. This is the fastest and most predictable of the three.
3. **BDC LIFT** — financing and advisory support for SMB AI adoption, not a grant.

They can often be stacked: ETG for the training, RAII for the project work, BDC for financing the rest. That combination is how a 15-person company funds a real AI rollout instead of a pilot that dies.

## Five Steps to Get Ready Before You Apply

1. **Pick one project with a countable outcome.** "Reduce quote turnaround from two days to four hours" beats "explore AI."
2. **Write the cost breakdown.** Software, implementation, training, staff time. Funders want numbers, not adjectives.
3. **Check the regional window first.** Call PacifiCan before you write anything; a good project with a missed deadline is worth nothing.
4. **Pair training with the project.** An adoption project that nobody is trained on fails. ETG can cover that piece.
5. **Keep the receipts and the baseline.** Funders and your own review both need before-and-after numbers.

### Quick Test: Is Your Project Fundable?

- Can you state the outcome in one sentence with a number in it?
- Do you know what it costs, broken into at least three lines?
- Is there a named person who will own it after the money is spent?

Two "no" answers means the project is not ready to submit — not that it is a bad idea.

## Funding Is Not the Hard Part

Most SMBs that fail at AI do not fail for lack of grants. They fail because nobody scoped the project, nobody owned it, and nobody measured it. Money helps; a plan is what makes the money useful.

This is the work DAOVA does with BC small and mid-sized businesses — scoping the project, [AI governance](https://go.daova.ai/blog), deployment, and training the team that will run it.

## The Bottom Line

There is more federal and provincial money for SMB AI adoption right now than most owners realize. But the funding windows are regional and they close. The businesses that benefit will be the ones that had a scoped project ready when the window opened.

**Your action this week:** write the one-sentence project you would fund, with a number in it, and call PacifiCan to ask when BC's next intake opens.
