On Tuesday, Meta [expanded its AI agent Muse to small businesses](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/29/meta-is-expanding-its-ai-agent-muse-to-small-businesses/). It's free to start (with usage limits), it's available in the U.S. and Canada, and it plugs into a long list of tools SMBs already run on: Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks, Klaviyo, Slack, Notion, Canva, Dropbox, Zoom, and more — plus your Instagram analytics, Facebook pages, and Meta ad accounts.

Meta's pitch is simple: small businesses are "short on hours, not ideas." Muse is meant to know what you sell, how your brand sounds, and what customers ask about most — and then actually do work across your tools.

For a lot of owners, that will be genuinely useful. It's also the most access any single AI tool has asked of a small business so far.

## Why the Integration List Is the Real Headline

A chatbot that drafts captions is low-stakes. An agent connected to your payments, your books, your customer email list, and your ad spend is a different category. Each connection is a door: it lets the agent read data, and in many cases act on it.

None of that makes Muse a bad idea. It makes it an *operations* decision, not a marketing experiment — and that's exactly where small businesses tend to skip the homework. Owners sign in with "Connect all" because it's fast, and months later nobody remembers what the agent can touch.

Free tools also have a way of becoming permanent. If Muse becomes the place where your team does its work, switching later gets harder. Better to set the terms on day one.

## A 5-Step Check Before You Connect an AI Agent to Your Business

### 1. Start with one job, not every integration

Pick one task you want help with — answering common customer questions, drafting weekly promos, summarizing ad performance. Connect only the tools that job needs. You can always add more later.

### 2. Separate "read" from "act"

Reading your Shopify orders is one thing. Issuing refunds, sending emails to your whole list, or changing ad budgets is another. Wherever the settings allow it, keep the agent read-only or require your approval before it acts.

### 3. Keep financial systems last

Stripe and QuickBooks hold the most sensitive data you have. Leave them disconnected until you've used the agent for a few weeks on lower-risk work and you trust its output.

### 4. Write down who owns it

Name one person responsible for the agent: what's connected, who has access, and when it gets reviewed. Two sentences in a shared doc is enough. It's the difference between a tool and a mystery.

### 5. Train the team before you scale it

Your staff need to know what the agent is allowed to do, what not to feed it, and how to check its work before it reaches a customer. That's a one-hour conversation that prevents most AI mistakes.

## A Quick Test Before You Click "Connect"

- Could you list, right now, every system this agent will be able to see?
- Do you know which of those it can change, not just read?
- If you turned it off tomorrow, would you know how to disconnect everything?

If any answer is "not sure," slow down for a day. It's the cheapest risk control you'll ever buy.

## A Note for BC Businesses

Step 5 is where most small businesses cut corners — and in British Columbia it's the easiest step to fund. Eligible workforce AI training may qualify for **up to 80% reimbursement** through the [B.C. Employer Training Grant](https://www.workbc.ca/plan-career/education-and-training/employer-training-grant), up to $10,000 per employee. DAOVA builds practical, vendor-neutral AI training and governance for SMBs, and helps simplify the grant application.

## The Bottom Line

Muse is a sign of where small business AI is heading: from chatbots that answer to agents that act inside your tools. That shift can save real hours — if you decide what the agent gets to touch before it starts touching it. This week, before connecting any AI agent, write down the one job you want it to do and the two or three tools that job needs. Start there.
